JMC Academy Alumni Tim Omaji (aka Timomatic) talks to JMC Academy about his international success as an accomplished artist, performer, producer and now affable judge on the current season of Australia's Got Talent.
"I’m so pumped to be on the judge’s desk of Australia's Got Talent 2013. It was only 2 years ago that I graced the stage of the same show as a contestant so this is a full circle moment for me. It is an honour and a privilege to be a part of discovering what incredible talent this amazing nation has to offer!"
Tim, christened Timomatic at the age of 15 by his mates for his sensational hip-hop dancing skills, spent six months at University studying Psychology and Management. He soon realised that his calling to be a performer was too strong to ignore.
Following his true passion, Timomatic went on to complete a Diploma of Music at JMC Academy in 2008 where he graduated with a distinction average. Tim explains 'I remember growing up, I was 10 years old when I really had that first burning desire to become a musician and an entertainer. I had this raw passion for music and had to decide, am I going to go to University or go straight into music. I knew I needed to go somewhere with people who knew a lot more than me"
Tim chose to study music at a tertiary level because “...as an artist and an entertainer in this day and age, you cannot do it by yourself; you need to build relationships in the industry. I needed to go to a place where people new a lot more than me. JMC Academy provided a course which I thought was different because it was a lot more diverse in what it offered. It wasn’t just the singing, it was the stage craft, and it was learning how to audio produce.”
Tim went on to win the Battlegrounds National Hip-Hop Competition, reached the top eight in So you think you can Dance Australia in 2009, was cast the starring role of Tyrone in Fame - The Musical 2011, and was a finalist on Australia's Got Talent 2011 which was followed by a sell-out national tour! The extraordinary artist signed with Sony Music Australia late 2011 and released his self penned debut single release 'Set It Off' which peaked at number two on the ARIA singles charts, was certified quadruple platinum by ARIA and nominated for Song of the Year at the 2012 ARIA awards. His newest single 'Parachute' has already peaked to number 3 on the Australian Singles Chart.
When asked about the catalyst for his success, Timomatic is quick to acknowledge the values of hard work and perserverence. He also credits JMC Academy for giving him the opportunity to practise and develop his passion for songwriting and performance." I was singing every day, and I had never been given the chance to do that in my life. I knew I had to make that a lifestyle. You never stop learning"
Tim’s advice to all students who are aiming to break the boundaries in the entertainment industry is “you really get what you put in. Use the time and the resources given to you to propel you forward because it’s a very unique course, a unique academy, and you get out what you put in”
