Imagine being able to say you performed on the same stage as Taylor Swift before you even graduated from High School?
JMC’s proud partnership with Open Season has taken Brisbane Audio Engineering, and Entertainment Business Management students behind the scenes to bring some of the programs’ most exciting shows to life, in the city's most iconic venues. Now in our third year, we pulled back the curtain even further and invited high school students across the city to participate in an immersive, three-day holiday workshop series that concluded at Brisbane’s most beloved live performance venue (and host to a fantastical flurry of international acts), The Tivoli.
What Is Open Season?
Open Season began in 2020 in an effort to keep the doors of The Tivoli Group’s venues open, and bring stages back to artists impacted by the global pandemic. Since then, it has grown and developed into Brisbane’s most anticipated cultural program, taking over some of the biggest stages (and streets) across the city including The Princess Theatre, QPAC’s Glasshouse Theatre, Winn Lane, The Fortitude Music Hall, and Crowbar, just to name a few. Engineered to spotlight local acts such as Full Flower Moon Band, and Peach PRC alongside international artists like Alison Wonderland and Matt Berninger, this extensive three month long program highlights some of the worlds top talent in an accessible, engaging format right at your doorstep.
Hands = On
Held over three days, high school students in years 10-12 were immersed in their chosen creative interest, diving headfirst into practical activities guided by our industry lecturers. The first two days at JMC’s Brisbane Campus were a crash-course on how a production comes to life, techniques for an outstanding performance, the ins and outs of creating an engaging audio-visual experience and getting familiar with all the (epic) tools of the trade.
Our aspiring Actors, Musical Theatre stars, Animators, Musicians, Filmmakers, Audio Engineers, and Entertainment Managers then took their hard work, polished performances, creations and technical knowledge to the bright lights of The Tivoli. In an epic third and final day, this cross-collaborative dream-team pulled every department together for a seamless, showstopping performance to an audience of proud parents, lecturers and industry representatives.
More Than Just A Holiday Program
This workshop wasn't just about giving high school hopefuls a taste of what the creative industries is really like. It was about community. It is one thing to know your craft, but it is another thing entirely to have a crew of people that you trust to help make something great. Each and every student got to walk away not just with industry know-how, but with memories made alongside new friends and a truly unforgettable experience.
And that’s what life at JMC is truly about; giving creatives a safe place to let their ambitions run wild and being there to support them every step of the way. It didn’t matter if you had years of voice coaching, or simply just loved singing and wanted to see where it could take you. Our program gave them the platform to soar, the tools to know how to do it safely, and the industry knowledge to understand where amongst the stars you could land.
All of this was achieved in just three days at JMC Academy. Imagine what two years could look like?
But wait! Theres...more?
Although our Open Season Holiday Program has closed curtains for 2026, it’s not over yet! Keep up your band rehearsals, and have your eyes peeled on our channels. Something very special is coming back to Brisbane soon!
