Comprising of past and current JMC Brisbane students, The Counterfeit Umbrellas describe themselves as ‘A folk-filled fanfare of toe-tapping melodies, soaring harmonies and anthems of happy high hopes.’
This Brisbane-based indie/folk band have flourished since their early 2014 debut, making their mark on the Australian music scene, recently taking part in The Independent Music Project, run by QUT. It aims to record 100 songs over 100 days, and rewards participating bands with great prizes and opportunities in the industry. The Counterfeit Umbrellas, who originally formed as part of a JMC group assessment, were one of the lucky top five bands who received a prize of complimentary sessions with a well-known PR company.
As high-energy performers, they have found further success when they were honoured to be announced as the winners of the 2015 Westfield Sound Search competition, after battling it out with the best of Brisbane music talent.
Not stopping there, they have been likened to international folk successes such as Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters & Men, and '
have taken to the stage to support well-renowned artists including Ash Grunwald, Busby Marou and Tex Perkins
. Their music has been featured on radio nationwide, with notable stations including Triple J Unearthed
, where their single placed in their Hottest 100 Countdown and remained in the charts for three consecutive months. For the recording of their second music video, they organised and hosted a music festival in Maleny, and were rewarded with a huge turnout and the ultimate opportunity to bring people closer together through music. They have begun work on their debut EP and and first national tour, edging them closer to fulfilling their dreams of taking the world by storm with their positive energy and music.’
Can’t wait to see what this indie-folk powerhouse get up to next! Best of luck to them – don’t forget your roots ;)
