In the run up to our next intake here at JMC, we thought we should give you a few pointers about how to survive and make the most of your time here!
It can be nerve-wracking starting somewhere new, so it’s nice to know a few people before you start. JMC Academy has a Facebook Group for each campus’ new intake, so if you are not in it, ask your Student Recruitment Advisor to add you to the group, and get involved! Find out who is studying the same course as you and say hi!
Get involved in O week
O Week isn’t just about partying (shock horror!). It’s also a chance to get to know your new environment. Your university should have all kinds of information set up about clubs and facilities, and also some general need-to-know things about how your new school operates. It is a great time to ask any questions you might have, because if you don’t ask, you’ll never know!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Your lectures may seem pretty intimidating, with hundreds of people all sitting in the one room, but they all understand how intimidating it can be, because at some stage they were first-year students themselves. Never hesitate to ask if you need to know something or if you need something repeated. And if you ever get lost or aren’t sure where to find something, just ask a fellow student where to go! The worst thing they might say is, "I’m not sure."
Make time to waste time
Don’t forget that you will procrastinate – researching, planning and writing are only half of what goes into an assignment. Start things early, at least three weeks before the deadline, because you WILL spend time procrastinating, so plan it into your timeline.
I don’t just mean all of your classes. Uni’s, especially a creative industries school such as JMC Academy, often have tons of fun events going on all the time; music showcases, design exhibitions, film screenings. Bring some friends along and support your fellow peers!
Make friends with Google scholar
I cannot explain how much this tool will save your life. When it comes to essays, this is your number 1 stop shop. Become best friends with it, have a look around it before you start.
You are starting your path to your dream career, meeting loads of cool people and learning lots of new things, so get excited! Wipe away the nerves and replace it with excitement because when you are finished, you will realise how much fun you had, and wish you could do it all over again.
