Music Student off to Canada on Prize Trip

JMC Academy music performance student and Oberon local, Mickey Pye, heads off to Canada with Gympie Muster and Tamworth Country Music Festival wins under his belt.

Last year, Mickey – a talented third-year Popular Music and Performance student at JMC Academy – walked away with the Maton Talent Search Winner 2009 and Aristocrat Country Entertainer of the Year 2009 titles under his belt, and 2010 is proving to be just as successful for this young entertainer.

Mickey attributes his success to his ability to write his own songs, play guitar and sing. “I guess the judges were looking for a complete package as well as for general appeal and marketability,” he said.

By far Mickey’s biggest prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to Canada to represent Australia and perform at the 2010 Merritt Mountain Festival.

“I am excited about contributing to putting Australia’s country music talent on the map. This is a genre of music that is growing in both size and popularity, and I believe we have the talent to compete on the world stage,” Mickey said.

“Given Australia’s friendly, open and authentic culture and our connection with the land, I think country music is an appropriate music style to represent the people and life in Australia.”

When Mickey’s asked how he describes his style, he laughs and says his music is “country with a good touch of rock”.
