Design (Visual Communication) at JMC

At JMC, design is how bold ideas come alive. You’ll learn to craft visuals that challenge the ordinary, connect people, and create real impact. You’ll think like a designer: curious, human-centred, and fearless, turning raw ideas into purposeful experiences across digital and physical worlds. Throughout the course, you’ll design for the real world, creating album art, theatre posters, websites, and merchandise in collaboration with artists, musicians, and performers who share your creative drive. Nitzan Waisberg

National Head of Design

Nitzan leads JMC Academy’s design program with a global perspective shaped by years of experience in human-centred design, innovation, and entrepreneurship. She has taught at Stanford University’s d school and Tel Aviv University’s Coller School of Management, where she co- founded a successful startup pre-accelerator.

Josh Coates

Senior Design [Visual Communication] Lecturer

Josh is Senior Lecturer in the Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication) at JMC Academy. His expertise in design thinking, ux, and graphic design spans across agencies in Asia and Australia working with clients including Google, YouTube, Telstra, Toyota, Dulux, Maybeline, Flybuys and more. Josh's contributions to this industry have been recognised by significant politicians and CEOs through direct interactions, corporate events and installations. Expanding on his practice of design, Josh is currently pursuing further study and professional development in the education space through learning design and teaching in higher education & vocational.

Andrew Barnum

Design Lecturer

Andrew Barnum is a Designer, Educator and Artist and continues to work on projects and in contexts that synthesise his experience and inspiration as a creative practitioner. In Design he is the chief creative officer of Social Design Action consultancy Peopleness, which is human-centered design focused. In education he is a PhD candidate at UTS researching the potential dislocation between Australian song, cultural identity and place in the digital age, and is course author and lecturer in the Bachelor of Design (Digital Design) at JMC Academy in Sydney.

As an artist his passion is songwriting and painting with independent releases on iTunes and Spotify as Andrew Barnum and Vitabeats, with a new project under the moniker of Memory Collective. His most recent paintings are a series of colour field investigations in Australian ‘colours in common.’

Rizwan Nawaz

Design & Entertainment Business Lecturer

Turning your creativity into a successful career. Riz is passionate about helping students build on their unique strengths, communicate with clarity and design with purpose.

With over 20 years’ experience in branding, retail, publishing and pitching, he brings industry expectations into the classroom. Teaching part-time keeps him grounded in both worlds, bridging the gap between study and practice.

Outside JMC, Riz runs his brand-building agency Studio Riz, helping ambitious businesses attract high-quality clients, win multi-million dollar projects and streamline their brand and business processes.
