Peter George

Head of Film & Television (Melbourne)

As a Producer, Director, Writer, Interviewer and Script Editor, Peter brings a resume of credit and awards to JMC Academy. As a filmmaker, major credits include the award winning documentaries Original Schtick, Schtick Happens, The Dream of Love, Not So Straight and The Triangle Wars, and fiction films Absence and William. Original Schtick won 2 AFI awards and the prestigious Rouben Mamoulian Award at the Sydney Film Festival. Almost all of Peter's films have travelled widely around the globe, including Original Schtick and William, which were invited to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Triangle War premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival as part of the MIFF Premiere Fund, and recently won Best Australian Documentary at the inaugural Antenna International Documentary Festival.

In addition to filmmaking, Peter has also worked as a copywriter, a book editor, an industry consultant, an Advertising Account Executive and was the former Editor of If Magazine.

Ben Samuel

Head of Acting + Music Theatre (Melbourne), and Chair of Learning and Teaching Committee

Having recently moved from New Zealand, Ben has immersed himself in the performing arts industry in Melbourne. In New Zealand, Ben has performed in several musicals, concerts, cabarets & music festivals across the country. His performance credits include singing, acting & dancing in major stage productions such as Carmen, Cats, Fiddler on the Roof, Hair, Curtains, Coca-Cola CCITP & Nelson Opera in the Park.

Ben has also performed alongside many New Zealand artists, with production companies such as Showbiz, Canterbury Opera & Chant et Danse, and was involved extensively in the New Zealand Jazz & Arts festivals for many years. During his time in Melbourne, Ben has been building a career in singing & teaching whilst standing by the words of Stephen Sondheim “..if I cannot fly, let me sing.”

Richie Poate

Head of Audio Engineering and Sound Production (Melbourne)

Richie is a technically proficient musician (electric and acoustic guitar) with a sound knowledge of music theory and practice, music production, recording, mixing and mastering engineering, Contemporary songwriting, composition and arrangement. Experience in the business aspects of the music industry – contract negotiation, tour and concert organising, promotions and media, grants and relationship building.

James O'Brien

Head of Music (Melbourne)

James graduated with a Bachelor of Music (performance) from the Queensland Conservatorium in 2001 and immediately began work as a touring musician successfully traversing the jazz and popular music worlds. With modern piano trio Misinterprotato, James toured around Australia, the U.S., Canada and Japan and contributed to the group's first two releases through the Melbourne based Jazzhead label.

As singer and songwriter in Brisbane-Melbourne based indie-pop group The Boat People, James has released three albums, toured the U.S. 8 times (including two trips to SXSW), the U.K. twice and supported many outstanding Australian and International acts including Powderfinger, Crowded House and The Shins. The Boat People have had 8 songs playlisted on national radio station Triple J and in 2007 James signed a publishing deal with Ivy League/Mushroom which has seen his songs used extensively in television and film.

In 2012, James co-wrote and sung the breakout single "Half of It" for producer duo YesYou which received high rotation radio play on Triple J. James currently works as touring bass player with avant-folk group Machine Translations and songstress Kate Miller-Heidke. With his new group Darling James, he produced and music directed the "8 First Dates" event at the 2014 Melbourne Fringe which featured guests Ainslie Wills, Angie Hart (Frente), Jae Laffer (The Panics) and many others. Darling James are about to release their debut single and recently opened for legendary Australian group, The Church.

Tania Wilson

Senior Entertainment Business Lecturer

Tania has worked in a diverse range of roles throughout her 25+ years in the music and events industry. From development and planning through to production and delivery of events, both boutique and major; in both independent artists and nightclub publicity, branding and marketing; out on national and international touring through the USA and Europe; and in independent artist management; to name a few areas of her career, she brings the breadth of skills learned throughout the years, to every class and to support every student at JMC. 

Her history includes working on iconic major events such as Midsumma Festival, Hanging Rock Concert Series, Australian Open, Melbourne Fashion Festival, Laneway Festival, Soundwave Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and the Royal Melbourne Show. She's also worked on shows and tours with headliners as varied as Bliss N Eso, Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Leonard Cohen, Midnight Oil, Slipknot, Stone Sour, as well as countless independent Aussie artists.

Still working out in the industry alongside her role at JMC, Tania is super passionate about supporting students to use their studies to develop real-industry projects and businesses, so they can start their journey into the wide wonderful world of the entertainment industry, even before they have finished their degree.

Head of Department for Animation & Games (Melbourne)

Robyn Dixon, the Head Lecturer for Animation and Game Design at JMC Academy in Melbourne, has an impressive background in the industry.

She previously held the position of Senior Lecturer for Animation at JMC Academy, showcasing her expertise and dedication to the field. Robyn's experience extends beyond academia; she was a UI Artist at Big Ant Studios, contributing to the visual aspects of gaming experiences. Her professional journey also includes working with notable clients such as the School Library Association of Victoria, Hardie Grant Egmont Publishing, Jetstar, Appster, Moose Toys, and Restless Socks, highlighting her versatility and wide-ranging skills. 

Robyn's return to JMC Academy reflects her ongoing passion for animation, games, ethical education, and leadership, all of which will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success and growth of the Animation and Game Design department.

Matt Kaylor

Senior Lecturer - Film & Television (Melbourne)

Matt has over 18 years Broadcast experience as a TV studio camera operator, working on some of the UK's most iconic game shows.(Deal or No Deal, Family Fortunes). Since 2008 he has taught Film and Television Production within the further and higher education sectors across the UK.  Matt has been documentary module leader, personal tutor and final year major project supervisor helping guide students into careers in the Film and television Industry.

Matt has over 18 years Broadcast experience as a TV studio camera operator, working on some of the UK's most iconic game shows.(Deal or No Deal, Family Fortunes). Since 2008 he has taught Film and Television Production within the further and higher education sectors across the UK.  Matt has been documentary module leader, personal tutor and final year major project supervisor helping guide students into careers in the Film and television Industry.
