Self tape audition guide
What to Prepare
You must prepare and submit the following self-taped audition components.
1. Singing
Perform one character song from a musical (1-1.5 minutes)
- You can select from our list or choose your own
- Use a backing track or live piano accompaniment (no a cappella or vocal editing)
- Pick a piece that shows your acting and vocal ability
2. Acting
Perform one contemporary monologue (1–2 minutes)
- You can select from our list or choose your own
- Choose material appropriate for your age, personality, and acting strengths
- Deliver the piece clearly, showing emotional connection and presence
3. Dance

Take all the time you want to learn the choreography, feel free to watch the video as many times as you need.
- Find a space that you can dance freely in and make sure your whole body is in the frame
Option 2: Submit your own dance footage, no longer than 1 minute, in the style of your choosing (ie Jazz, Commercial, Tap, Ballet etc)
Already recorded something that fits?
You are welcome to submit previously recorded material, as long as it meets the requirements for content, framing, and quality (see below).
Please note: All three components must be combined and submitted as one single video file, edited together in sequence before you submit, please put your name in the title of the video.
How to Record Your Self-Tapes
- Use a smartphone or tablet - professional cameras not required
- Record in landscape (horizontal) format
- Use a solid-coloured wall or neutral background
Frame:
- Acting: Head to waist
- Singing: Head to waist
- Dance: Full body visible at all times
- Light your face from the front, natural light is the best lighting!
- Avoid backlighting (e.g. avoid having a window or lamp directly behind you)
- Use a backing track or piano accompaniment - keep the audio source closer to you than the camera
- Do a trial recording to check sound, lighting, and framing
- Position the camera at eye level (you can use books, a tripod, or shelf)
- Speak and sing clearly - no microphone needed
Uploading Your Videos
Upload to YouTube or Vimeo
- Set each video to Unlisted or Public
- Do not use password-protected links, as we will not be able to view them.
Once uploaded:
- Copy the full video URL.
- Check that each link opens and plays properly.
- Email the link to your dedicated Admissions Advisor alongside your Statement of Intent. (See: Music Theatre Application Process)
Tip: Give your video a clear name like FirstnameLastname_SelfTape so we can easily identify your submission.
FAQs
No, JMC Academy does not charge an audition fee. We aim to keep the audition process accessible and welcoming for all applicants.
A song from a professionally produced stage musical (e.g., Wicked, Les Misérables, Next to Normal). Avoid pop songs, classical arias, or anything not written for the stage.
You can view our Suggested Song Lists that is separated by voice types to help you find a song that suits you.
That’s okay. Just include what you can confidently perform. If you’re not trained, focus on clear, expressive movement. The aim is to show effort, not perfection.
On YouTube or Vimeo, look for video visibility settings. Use “Unlisted” if you don’t want it searchable, but still viewable via link. Test the link in an incognito window before submitting.
If it's before the deadline, yes. Just make sure to update your audition form with the new links.
