How to Record Your Self-Tapes

  • Use a smartphone or tablet - professional cameras not required
  • Record in landscape (horizontal) format
  • Use a solid-coloured wall or neutral background

Frame:

  • Acting: Head to waist
  • Singing: Head to waist
  • Light your face from the front, natural light is the best lighting!
  • Avoid backlighting (e.g. avoid having a window or lamp directly behind you)
  • Use a backing track or piano accompaniment - keep the audio source closer to you than the camera
  • Do a trial recording to check sound, lighting, and framing
  • Position the camera at eye level (you can use books, a tripod, or shelf)
  • Speak and sing clearly - no microphone needed
