Music Theatre at JMC

The Diploma of Creative Arts (Music Theatre) is your fast-track introduction to professional performance training. Across two trimesters, you’ll turbo-charge your singing, dancing, and acting skills through rigorous, industry-standard practical training. You’ll learn from experienced mentors and collaborate on theatrical and screen projects to build your portfolio and bring original performances to life.

You’ll train in performance for stage, screen, and new media, gaining the versatility and confidence needed to launch your career in Australia’s Music Theatre and Acting industries. Together, we’ll help you shape your unique path as a performer ready for today’s evolving entertainment landscape.

This Diploma is ideal for aspiring performers ready to take their first professional steps in singing, dancing, and acting for stage and screen. Ben Samuel

Head of Acting + Music Theatre (Melbourne), and Chair of Learning and Teaching Committee

Having recently moved from New Zealand, Ben has immersed himself in the performing arts industry in Melbourne. In New Zealand, Ben has performed in several musicals, concerts, cabarets & music festivals across the country. His performance credits include singing, acting & dancing in major stage productions such as Carmen, Cats, Fiddler on the Roof, Hair, Curtains, Coca-Cola CCITP & Nelson Opera in the Park.

Ben has also performed alongside many New Zealand artists, with production companies such as Showbiz, Canterbury Opera & Chant et Danse, and was involved extensively in the New Zealand Jazz & Arts festivals for many years. During his time in Melbourne, Ben has been building a career in singing & teaching whilst standing by the words of Stephen Sondheim “..if I cannot fly, let me sing.”

Darren Mapes

Music Theatre Lecturer

Darren Mapes is an award-winning performer, creative, and educator with over 30 years of experience across Australia’s entertainment industry. A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Darren’s career spans theatre, television, cabaret, and live music performance.

He has appeared in major Australian productions including Les Misérables, Into the Woods, Shout!, The Rocky Horror Show, and Hairspray, and has performed with companies such as Sydney Theatre Company, The Production Company, and Gordon Frost Organisation.

As a cabaret artist and musical director, Darren has toured nationally and internationally, creating acclaimed productions such as Duets and Liza (on an E), and performing alongside some of Australia’s most celebrated talent.

Passionate about nurturing the next generation of performers, Darren brings his extensive industry knowledge and creative energy into the classroom - helping students develop not only their technical skills but also their confidence and individuality as artists.

Natalie Gamsu

Music Theatre Lecturer - Singer, Actor & Cabaret Artist

Natalie Gamsu is a singer, actor, and cabaret artist with acclaimed performances across New York, Chicago, London, Sydney and more. Credits include The Big Time, Candide, Mary Poppins, Strictly Ballroom, and Ali's Wedding. She has won a Backstage Bistro Award and MAC Award.

Benjamin Curé

Music Theatre Lecturer - Dancer & Choreographer

Benjamin Curé is a Melbourne-based dancer & choreographer. He founded Lion Heart Dance Company in 2015 and has performed with Vertical Shadows. Opera Australia, and on So You Think You Can Dance. He choreographed The Scarlet Trace, Table of Eight, Fabricated, ENVISION, and the Inhabit Dance Festival. 

Tayla Muir

Music Theatre Lecturer
Specialist in Contemporary & Classical Voice

Tayla is a Melbourne-based performer and voice teacher with 7+years of experience. Her credits include Stella in Jack Frost, Martha in Spring Awakening, and Joan in Decoration Day. Tayla specialises in Musical Theatre, Contemporary and Classical Voice. 

Simon Ward

Music Theatre Lecturer

Simon Ward is an actor, psychologist and educator. He has performed in London’s West End, New York City & throughout Australia in musicals, plays, opera and extensively in cabaret. He has also directed shows for the Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne Fringe Festivals. Simon is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, a Member of the Australian Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist & Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a member of the British Voice Association, the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Manhattan Association of Cabarets, of the Music Theatre Educators Alliance (MTEA), the Australian Society for Performing Arts Healthcare, and a proud Equity UK & MEAA Equity Australia member. Simon is also a member of the MEAA Equity Wellness Committee.

He has worked in the NSW Government Health Department, as a consultant psychologist for the Australian Ballet & works in private practice. He presented at the MTEA Conference in NYC, the APS conference, and the Estill Voice Symposium in London. Simon teaches acting, voice, and mental health in tertiary musical theatre and dance programs in Australia and regularly runs workshops for schools, educational institutions, health professionals, teachers, performers, NGOs and creative arts bodies.

What you learn

You’ll develop essential acting, voice, and movement skills while learning how to bring characters to life across stage and screen. Through practical workshops and performance projects, you’ll explore acting techniques, ensemble collaboration, and the creative process behind professional productions. 

What you gain

By the end of the Diploma, you’ll have built a solid foundation in screen and stage performance and gained valuable on-set and rehearsal experience. You’ll leave with performance footage, feedback from industry professionals, and the practical skills needed to transition smoothly into the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Music Theatre).

Into the Music Theatre Bachelor Degree

On completion, you’ll be ready to take your performance skills to the next level. The Diploma of Creative Arts (Music Theatre) provides a direct and seamless pathway into the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Acting) with major in Music Theatre with full credit for your completed trimesters, so you can continue developing your singing, dancing, and acting skills for stage, screen, and new media without starting over.
