Lessons with Elvis and Slim: Country musician Mickey Pye is learning how to make his music pay.
As a country music singer, Mickey Pye is a bit of an oddity in downtown Surry Hills. But the boot scootin’ boy from Oberon is making his mark – and learning how to market himself at the same time.
After growing up on a mixture of Elvis Presley and Slim Dusty, Pye’s brand of music is firmly country rock. The 22-year-old is in his third year of a Popular Music and Performance degree at JMC Academy in inner Sydney, where he has been studying on a scholarship.
Even before he graduates, Pye is already using his broad skills to develop a product – the Mickey Pye Band – and market it.
He’s put together a professional website and merchandise and has hit the road to perform. He also organizes his own gigs.
Pye’s music has been played on ABC Radio and televised on Foxtel’s Country Music Channel.
