JMC Laneway Placement Terms and Conditions

1. Purpose

The Terms and Conditions outline the partnership between Laneway Festival, JMC Academy and the placement students. The purpose of these placements is to provide JMC Academy students with opportunities to experience structured, real-world work environments that complement their formal studies.  These experiences aim to prepare students for the transition from academic study to professional practice.

2. Scope

The Terms and Conditions apply to:

JMC Academy students selected to participate as part of the Laneway crew at the 2026 Laneway Festivals, on the Gold Coast (Saturday 7 February 2026), Sydney (Sunday 8 February 2026), and Melbourne (Friday 13 February 2026).

JMC Academy staff are involved in delivering the partnership and placement program.

Internship host employers, including Laneway Festival and any third-party contractors engaged by them.

3. Policy

3.1 Placement Structure

Exposure to on-the-job work experiences forms an important part of JMC Academy's student learning experiences. Typical on-the-job work experiences include a variety of activities, such as:

  • Observing workplaces

  • On-the-job training

  • Simulations and virtual experiences

  • Internships and/or placements

3.2 Requirements for Placements

Placements are designed to provide students with meaningful workplace experiences and allow them to refine their job skills to improve their employability.

Laneway, in collaboration with JMC, is committed to providing meaningful workplace experiences for the duration of the placement period.

Students are responsible for their active participation in the placement and for adhering to safe work practices and any safety procedures advised by Laneway.   .

The Student acknowledges and agrees that, at the request of Laneway Festival, the Placement may require attendance at pre-event planning meetings and participation in event “bump-in” and “bump-out” activities. Such attendance and participation form a condition of the Placement.

These activities are managed and directed solely by Laneway Festival, and JMC Academy accepts no responsibility or liability for their organisation, supervision, safety or scheduling.

Any additional expenses incurred by the Student in attending or participating in these activities (including but not limited to transport, meals and accommodation) are the responsibility of the Student unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Successful applicants shall be responsible for arranging and covering the cost of their own transportation to and from the event.

By applying, you consent to being photographed or recorded, and to these images or recordings being used for promotional or marketing purposes by the organiser. If you do not wish to be photographed or recorded, please inform staff on arrival; however, complete exclusion cannot be guaranteed.

3.3 Supervision

Placement supervision will involve:

  1. Workplace supervisor from Laneway or third-party contractors as appointed by Laneway, who will provide on-site direction and supervision to participating students.
  2. A JMC Academy nominated staff member, who will maintain communication with both the student and Laneway to monitor progress and wellbeing.

Protocols for communication and feedback are put in place between JMC Academy, the host employer, and the student.

3.4 Safety and Duty of Care

All parties involved, including students, JMC Academy supervising staff, Laneway, their staff and third-party contractors, share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment for themselves and others.

Laneway is responsible for ensuring its sites and activities operate under safe work practices and for communicating these to all participants. This includes providing any required safety briefings, work statements, practices, and emergency procedures.

Throughout the placement, JMC Academy maintain oversight of student participation and will seek feedback from both students and Laneway to identify and address any issues or areas of concern. However, Laneway and its contractors retain direct responsibility for workplace supervision and safety during the event.

If a student receives a formal offer to work additional hours from Laneway or other third-party contractors, it is at the student's discretion. JMC Academy will no longer have a duty of care after the official placement hours with Laneway have concluded.

4. Procedure

4.1 Application Process

Eligible students must submit an application, indicating their preferred area of placement.

4.2 Host Employer Selection Criteria

Host employers must demonstrate:

  • Capacity to provide a structured program of meaningful work.
  • Commitment to a safe working environment.
  • Commitment to diversity and equity.

4.3 Notice of Outcome

Successful applicants will be contacted via email correspondence by Friday, 5th December. If applicants do not receive any communication by this date, they have been unsuccessful.

4.4 Induction and Orientation

Both successful students and host employers will undergo an induction process, covering safety, expectations, and communication procedures.

5. Insurance

As applicable, Laneway, its third-party contractors and JMC Academy will carry appropriate insurance required to ensure adequate coverage for students.

JMC Academy holds Voluntary Workers Groups Personal Insurance to protect students during their specified shift allocation. Should a Laneway’s third-party contractor request students to extend their shift time, students are then covered under that third-party contractor's insurance.

The terms and conditions serve to ensure a professional, meaningful and safe environment for all parties involved in the placement program at Laneway Festival and JMC Academy.
