Working with STREAT Beat

JMC Academy are proud to announce that we are sponsoring the Melbourne based Social Enterprise, STREAT, streat2.jpghelping homeless and disengaged youth make sure that their future stories will be better than their past stories through music.

In collaboration with the Danish producer, Mads Oustrup and local singer/songwriter, Nicole Wheatley, STREAT is working with a collective of Melbourne based songwriters, producers and music professionals, to become co-authors of these incredibly powerful stories: #STREATbeats.

44,000 of Australia’s homeless are young people aged under 25 years and the average age a young person flees home escaping family violence is 10 years old. We want to help change this.

#STREATbeats is leveraging the universal language of music to convey hope, give voice and amplify the stories from the streets. The goal is to allow Melburnians to hear different perspectives and deepen their compassion for what it means to be homeless and disengaged in the most ‘liveable’ city in the world. These empowering songs will be recorded right here at JMC Academy as part of our sponsorship with STREAT.
The project is an amazing opportunity to spread knowledge on youth homelessness to thousands of people.

JMC Melbourne Head of Audio Rob Care who set up this collaboration with STREAT talks about the initative;
‘When I was approached by the STREAT team to be a part of this initiative, I felt it would make perfect sense to assist in the recording and mixing elements of this project. Having our students partake in such an event reinforces the skills and knowledge obtained during their course, and ultimately puts them in the thick of it with short deadlines and turnaround times, as well as working with some established and well recognised musicians. Lastly, to be involved with such a worthy project, it shows professionalism, and a willingness to give back to the community, and to help those less fortunate. I am extremely proud to be part of this, and I am equally proud of my students who shared the same passion and enthusiasm.’
As an addition to spread these amazing songs, STREAT is doing a big Christmas collaboration with Melbourne Central where all the wrapping paper in hundreds of shops will be a STREAT map of Melbourne CBD, featuring a bunch of stories from STREAT's work and the young people. There will be a link to the songs on this map so that the many thousands of customers opening presents this Christmas will hear these stories.
