Preparing your Music for Mastering

Rob Care has been giving his top Audio tips to AGM again, so we summarised his advice on preparing your musicmixing.jpg for mastering…

-    Volume

If sending your mix off for mastering, make sure your mix is measuring -6dB to provide ‘headroom’ so the mastering engineer can get the mix clearer and more distinct.

-    Instrument Balance

Make sure all of the instruments and sound can be heard equally, and are carefully placed within the stereo field.

-    Dynamic Processors

Never use compressors or limiters on the output chain of your mix as it reduces the dynamics of your mix.
