JMC Academy’s Game Design course explores the creative origination of ideas and the design, development and implementation of those ideas into new game environments. Students’ abilities are built from the fundamentals up, with emphasis placed on drawing, sculpting and conceptual design. Strategies of creativity and expression are explored through concept development and game-play mechanics.
Students graduate with hands-on expertise in leading industry software like Maya and the Unity game engine. Techniques such as concept drawing, environment modelling, digital sculpting, rigging, and game engine implementation are also developed to create high quality game art assets. By working together in teams to create interactive game prototypes, students are able to exercise their job-readiness in their chosen specialty whilst contributing to a creative project outcome.
For anyone passionate about becoming a world builder and storyteller, this course is for you.
Diploma of Creative Arts (Game Design)
The Diploma course is focused on learning the fundamentals. Students are equipped with the tools necessary to explore concepts and ideas in words and drawings.
They are then required to take those elements and start developing them into sophisticated outcomes. Students will begin to understand the core components of visual narrative and games design.
During the Diploma, students are exposed to the rich and diverse history of the medium, both in theory and in hands-on experience, with a range of traditional expressive animation techniques. They will be introduced to game art development practice helping them to build a solid foundation upon which to further deepen their critical level of knowledge and understanding.
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Game Design)
In the final trimesters of study, students learn a number of sophisticated skills including character rigging, intricate application scripting for games engines and motion capture for real-time games animation and cinematics. These skills are geared towards the final project which begins with the formation of teams, the generation of ideas and a
thorough work-up of the games design process.
In the final trimester of studio development, teams spend time producing their game concept in a process designed to emulate a real-world game production.
With lecturers acting as Executive Producers, students incorporate knowledge developed thus far to produce a fully-interactive game world. These worlds may be suited for use as either a prototype of a possible larger production, or a complete smaller-scale independent games project. Finally, students are supported in developing their games art show reels and skills for finding suitable employment as they transition into the professional workplace.
